The Community Hall
Festival Closing Night Party
This year’s Isle of the Arts Festival is wrapping up with a grand, gala celebration featuring a community art exhibit. The show Handmade Selfies: A Portrait of a Community includes hundreds of handmade self-portraits using a wide variety of media including collage, fabric, paint, colour markers and pencils, driftwood, moss, and more (no selfie sticks here!). The Selfies Show is not just for artists!—every portrait submitted will be shown and submissions from people with no previous experience are welcome (see gabriolamural.blogspot.com for more info).
Gabriolans of all ages and interests (including all GES students) have been working individually and gathering in groups to create their self portraits, either on their own or with support from a team of GAC volunteers. If you are interested in participating, you can pick up your Selfie Kit (art paper and instructions) for $10 at North Road Sports or the GAC office. Two varieties are available—art paper or watercolour paper. The deadline to submit Handmade Selfies for the show is April 12—you still have plenty of time! Why not host or organize a Selfie-Making Party with friends and neighbours?
Also at the gala: we’ll present the 2019 Arty Award to the Gabriola Players (see full announcement here). You can view an exciting gallery of work created by participants in the Isle of the Arts workshops (everyone who participates in a workshop is encouraged to bring their creation). Dancing and grooving to DJ Jason Brown. Cheap (and delicious!) eats by Becky and Alex. Door prizes. Cash bar. Mel Teichrob is our MC for the evening—expect fun and hijinks!
This is a family and community event—everyone is welcome! Admission is $10, and free for children under 14. Tickets are available online at www.artsfest.artsgabriola.ca, or in person at North Road Sports and the GAC office (Mon to Fri, 10 am to 5 pm)
