This workshop is for creative business owners who wear the many hats of sole proprietorship.  If you have ever wondered about the questions below? Then this Pro-D day is for you!

What is the best way to organize my financials, build capacity and grow my business?

This Pro-D Day is a collaboration between the Community Economic Development Officer, the Gabriola Chamber Manager, Dinah D and the Gabriola Arts Council.


9:00 – 11:00am Introductory to Grant Writing in Canada
Instructor: Dinah D


Dinah D will take you through the beginner steps of grant writing, to familiarize you with the process. Get beginner chops from “how to find the right grant” to submitting it. 


Dinah D lives on Gabriola but works nationally as a professional touring musician and locally as a visual artist. She has written many grants, sat on many grant juries and is happy to share that wisdom with you.

11:30am – 1:00pm How to Teach a Workshop
Instructor: Tony Grove & Panel Discussion


Teaching skills and sharing hands on experience can be rewarding both financially and by connecting with people interested in your work.

This two-part workshop will get your creative juices flowing about what you can teach and how to set up the basic structures for successful workshops. In the first portion of the workshop, instructor Tony Grove will take you through the basics of setting up a successful class. The second half will be a panel discussion with 5 locals who have been running workshops as part of their business model.


Tony Grove is a shipwright by trade, as well as a Marine Artist, custom woodworker and teacher. He has been educating in multi-disciplines internationally for over 15 years.

Ever wonder how other creative based business owners do it?

And what exactly are they doing and how? This workshop can answer those questions!  

Local experts and business owners share their insights on growth, strategy and organization. Each one speaking for 15-20 minutes about their personal business journey, lessons learned, pro-tips and tools they discovered along the way. Think “Ted Talks” from locals for locals on building a thriving creative business. After the individual speakers, there will be a facilitated panel discussion.

4:30 – 6:30pm Marketing Your Business Online

This workshop is designed for you to cover the basics of making sure your business is properly set up to be found easily and quickly online. The world of digital marketing is quick to change, and you’ll need to be ready for it if you want your creative-based business to succeed. This workshop will cover website, social media, google maps and digital advertising options for business.


Chelsea Barr & Megan Beauregard are graduates of VIU’s Bachelor of Tourism Management Degree program, this dynamic duo have 20+ years of combined knowledge & work experience in the tourism, hospitality & marketing industries. Chelsea and Megan have a ton of experience working alongside each other delivering tourism marketing, media relations, social media & programs to stakeholders & visitors in the Region.
