Kata—or forms—are an intrinsic component of many martial arts. Originally used to pass on the art of self-defense (Goshin Jitsu) without words or writing, they have evolved into many beautiful and spectacular variations. Explore some of those variations and how different interpretations determine the artistic nature of the forms. Learn basic moves from several kata and the self defense interpretations behind them.

Mike Richards is a martial artist with more than 30 years experience. He has taught karate and self-defense in Canada, Australia, and the UK, and currently teaches on Gabriola. He holds a third degree black belt (Sandan) in Kyokushin Karate and is a nationally-qualified referee and judge.
